Tesla introduced its new pricing structure for the Supercharger Network with a simple list of costs per kWh and minute depending on the regions just last week, but a Model S owner has already created a better way to visualize the cost of traveling on the new structure.
New owners don’t have to worry about this yet since it only applies to vehicles ordered after January 15 and they still get 400 kWh of free Supercharging annually, which should be sufficient for most people.
But if you are planning a cross-country road trip in the US or to use your Tesla to travel trough Europe, you might drive through those Supercharger credits rather quickly and therefore, it can be useful to calculate the cost across several different regions with different pricing.
Ben Sullins, Tesla Model S owner and ‘Data Geek’ on Youtube, built a tool just for that and consequently, it’s also a great way to visualize the new cost structure.

It’s fairly straightforward if you want to just visualize the cost per region. You simply have to use the toggles at the top. The prices are obviously directly linked to the cost of electricity in those regions.
It’s just a little more complicated if you want to plan a trip, you have to find out the mileage between your two locations (with Google map for example), enter that in ‘Distance’ in the top right and then simply select all the states, provinces, or countries you plan on driving through. The tool will calculate your effective rate per kWh and even account for tier one and two charging where it is necessary since some regions don’t allow for the sale of electricity and therefore, Tesla has to charge per minute depending on the charge rate.
