Tesla is aiming to hold Model 3 unveil ‘part 3’ in ‘3-4 months from now’, says Elon Musk

These reveals being broken down in parts are starting to get confusing. When first unveiling the Model 3 at an event on March 31, 2016, Elon Musk said that there would be a “part two” unveiling of the vehicle.

Last month, Musk said that Tesla equipping every new car with self-driving capable hardware was the “part two”, since the Model 3 is an upcoming new car for Tesla, but he also said that there will be a “part 3”.

Yesterday, Musk clarified the timing of the upcoming event. He says it will happen in “3-4 months from now”.

It puts the timing around March or almost exactly a year after the first unveiling of the Model 3.

Musk made the comment during the special shareholders meeting to approve the merger with SolarCity, which they approved by 85%. We couldn’t hear the question being asked in the webcast of the meeting, but we could hear Musk’s answer:

“Today is not the time for that announcement. Uh but I mean it’s probably, yeah, I don’t know, um, beginning of spring, or something. Yeah – 3-4 months from now.”

But John Beans, the shareholder who asked the question, confirmed to Electrek that he was asking about the part 3 of the Model 3 reveal.

The Model 3 prototypes unveiled in March 2016 were considered “Pre-Alpha” prototypes. As of September, Tesla hadn’t completed the Beta prototypes of the Model 3 yet. The main thing expected for the “part 3” of the unveil is the actual final production design of the vehicle.

The updated features are expected to be a bigger trunk opening and a new interior that will feature a new steering wheel and either an actual instrument cluster or a heads-up display, which has been rumored since Musk called the steering controls “spaceship-like”.

Musk also recently said that a “solar roof” could be an option on the Model 3 – though he also said that Tesla could hold back a few of the more adventurous options in the first version of the car in order to more easily bring it to market.

The priority at Tesla is to bring the vehicle to market on time in order to satisfy the crazy demand with over 400,000 reservations and the company says that it is on target for “volume production and deliveries of Model 3 in the second half of 2017″. It disclosed that production line layout is completed in Fremont and it is now testing subsystems for the vehicle program.
