Early Tesla Model 3 reservation holders will have ‘something special’ to make their car stand out

wetport_1

When Tesla started taking orders for the Model 3 on March 31st, CEO Elon Musk confirmed that unlike Tesla’s previous models, there will not be any ‘Signature reservation’ option for the Model 3. With the Model S and X, Tesla opened up 1,000 ‘Signature reservation’ spots per market for a $40,000 deposit (versus $5,000 for a regular reservation).

A ‘Signature reservation’ assured that you would get the vehicle sooner than anyone in your market and you also had the option to choose a special color called ‘Signature red’ to make your car stand out. Tesla decided not to offer the same option for the Model 3 and anyone can reserve the car with a $1,000 deposit, but now Musk says that early reservation holders will still have “something special” to make their car stand out.

He made the comment as part of his little “tweetstorm” yesterday during which he also said that the Model 3 will “probably” have an option for a solar roof and that an upcoming new easter egg could soon unlock more power in the Tesla P100d with the Ludicrous battery upgrade.

Musk continued answering a few questions later in the evening and when asked by Ryan McCaffrey (from ‘Ride the Lightning: the Unofficial Tesla Podcast) if there’s “any chance of Signature Red paint being offered as an option for March 31 Model 3 reservation holders?”, he answered:

“There will be something special.”

Here’s the Twitter thread in question:

It’s not clear if we are talking about a new color again or something else to make early reservation holders stand out.

Also, it looks like we are only talking about people who place their reservation the very first day on March 31. Tesla already sent out Model 3 design sketches as a “token of appreciation” to people who placed a reservation on the 31st, but Musk had also hinted at something more.

Now it looks like it will have to do with the vehicle itself, which is sure to spark speculation. Considering over 100,000 people reserved the vehicle on the first day, quite a few could be eligible to this “something special”.

If it has to do with the paint, Musk already said that he was considering to release the matte black color like on one of the prototypes unveiled:

Maybe it could be made into a reservation holder exclusive?

Or maybe one of the cool new wheel designs shown for the first time on the Model 3 prototypes at the unveil event:

Let us know what you think the “something special” could be in the comment section below.

The Tesla Model 3 is scheduled to enter production in “mid-2017′, but early reservation holders should be able to configure their order at least a few weeks or even months before. So we should get a better idea of what the “something special” will be in the coming months.
