Tesla starts to deliver ‘first grid-scale Powerpack system’ in Europe

Everything points toward Tesla ramping up its commercial and utility-scale energy storage business in recent weeks. We are not talking about the Powerwall, but the Tesla Powerpack – 100 kWh stackable battery packs for large commercial projects and grid-scale systems.

Earlier this month, Tesla announced a 1.5 MWh Powerpack system at Brea Mall in California and then a giant 80 MWh project with Southern California Edison.

Now we learn of the very ‘first grid-scale Tesla Powerpacks in Europe’ starting to be installed in the UK.

Camborne Energy Storage, a UK-based developer of large-scale energy storage projects, confirmed to Electrek that it recently took delivery of 5 Powerpacks from Tesla for solar and energy storage system in Somerset.

While it is starting with just 5 Powerpack (~500 kWh), the company hopes to take advantage of the modular and scalable features of the Tesla Powerpack and add to the system and complement the 1 MW planned solar capacity at the site.

The company writes in a press release:

“The combined solar and battery installation has the capacity to provide power for over 500 homes. Camborne has selected this design to demonstrate the ability to provide a balanced grid and grow its ambitions for pioneering co-located energy systems throughout the UK.”

Camborne’s energy storage division plans to deploy as much as 100MWh of energy storage projects in the UK.

Dan Taylor, Managing Director of Camborne, said about the announcement:

the development of Tesla’s first European grid-tied system is an exciting step forward for Camborne and Tesla in terms of our respective storage strategies. This project is another success for storage development in the UK and being co-located with a renewable generation site, should offer significant benefits to all stakeholders.

While this is the beginning of Tesla Powerpack installations in the UK, Tesla already started delivering the Powerwall in the country. Fully Charged recently visited one of the first Tesla Powerwall installations in the UK:
