Tesla Autopilot crash: Images of the fatal accident’s aftermath emerge [Video]

tesla autopilot crash aftermath

As we previously reported, the fatal Tesla Autopilot accident happened last month in Florida, but it has been fascinating the media since last night after NHTSA launched an evaluation of Tesla’s Autopilot system over the accident. Now ABC sent a team to investigate in Florida and uncovered images of the aftermath of the accident.

The report claims to have a few new details, but I would take this with a grain of salt since there are a few inaccuracies in their reporting.

For example, the ABC anchor calls the accident the “first driverless car death”. Obviously, the vehicle wasn’t “driverless”, the driver, Joshua Brown, died in the crash. The Tesla Model S was equipped with ‘Autopilot’ which has some autonomous features but it is still a ‘driver assist’ system – emphasis on the word ‘driver’.

The report also says that a witness was told by an investigator on the scene that “a movie was playing on the dash”. The truck driver involved in the accident also claimed that Brown was watching a movie while driving, but so far, the police only confirmed that a portable DVD player was found at the scene and not necessarily that it was being used while driving.

The witness also implied that Brown was driving faster than 85 mph.

Here’s the report with images of the aftermath of the crash:
