VW is teasing a new electric plug-in SUV concept to be unveiled next week [Gallery]

Vokswagen sent out a press release this morning with new images to tease an upcoming electric plug-in hybrid SUV concept to be unveiled at the Beijing Auto show next week.

The company describes the concept as a “premium SUV’ and it will release the concept under its VW brand – even though Volkswagen as another premium electric SUV, although all-electric, coming out under its luxury brand: Audi.

The automaker released a list of features (see below), including an estimated NEDC-rated range on all-electric of 31 miles (50 km). As usual, the NEDC cycle is rarely representative of real-world range, which should be closer to ~20 miles in this case.

  • The concept is one of the most advanced luxury SUVs in the world
  • Concept moves luxury SUV design to a more sporty and elegant level
  • The vehicle further demonstrates Volkswagen’s continued digitilization of the automobile
  • Digital operation and display system enables a completely new level of interactivity
  • Active Info Display and infotainment system merge
  • More than ever, the lounge-style interior and digitized operation are centered on passengers
  • SUV has a plug-in-hybrid powertrain with 376 horsepower total output and 516 pound-feet of torque
  • The fully electric range of the SUV is up to 50 kilometers or 31 miles
  • The predicted NEDC combined fuel consumption is 78 mpg
  • The concept accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in 6.0 seconds and has a top speed of 139 mph

Well, another hybrid car without any attempt developing a sustainable power train. What a shame about German engineering or at least it isn’t about the engineers but moreover about the rotten CEOs in desicion.

How kind of them to release the stats in advance – now you already know it sucks and you don’t need to look any further tomorrow.

I’ve already put down my Model 3 deposit. For you to make me change my mind about it, you’ll need to manage at least three of the following:
#1 – Pure EV with a range of 200+ miles and 0-60 in under 6 seconds.
    #2 – 100% self driving
    #3 – Under $35K
    #4 – Deliver before end of 2017

This car possibly delivers on #2-4, so maybe is worth considering. But I kind of doubt it.

Doubtful the will deliver any of your requirements.

I used to like VW (have had quite a few, driving one now), but they have gotten way too conservative over time. Bland. Boring. And that’s before dieselgate… Hopefully their current issues will lead to struggle, and struggle will lead to change. Cuz we (consumers) all need more good EV choices.

Competition is all that can continue to drive Tesla too. Without it, we may see M-3 deliveries slip, and more delay to M-Y and beyond.

VW: Hybrids will looks pretty old and silly in a few short years. Probably not too long after this one hits the market.

  3. A hybrid… Cmon..
    Boooooo.

    Mitsubishi competitor

The design from the front looks interesting… but a Hybrid is a NO, No since the advent of Model 3 😀

Considering VW were caught pants down only a ~year ago, I doubt they are even technically able to present a full EV yet. Perhaps earliest announcement sometime next year. Curious question to think what happens to the whole German combustion engine know-how and ecosystem. They have tens of thousands of experts invested their whole career for the tech that has become irrelevant overnight (you know which night that was), not to mention the massive education/university pipeline of new graduates they are pumping to the employment market every year.

That’s for sure one big side of the medal but one the other one there’s so much potential about mechanical engineering know-how, due to tons of electrical devices and propulsions systems in the industry as well, fork lifters, conveyor belts, there are e-motors all the way, highly efficient (IE3 and in 2017 IE4) and in high quality, if I can make little advertisement for the engineering in my country.
I like Tesla a lot, it’s about innovation, vision and the urge to make a change but I’m ashamed of the big car companies, to stick with the big golden profit cow “combustion engine” and I’m just an engineering apprentice but convinced that there are so much more chances (also economical ones) in switching in renewable/high efficient technologies, than doing the old track once and again.

Any time I see an automaker give only an NEDC rating, it’s hard for me to not dismiss them out of hand.
By time point, evey one of them should know that rating is borderline bogus; include the EPA figure or don’t waste my time.

~20 miles of 100% electric range.
Wow! Tesla is dead! … or not.

They put a small battery in their car only to get the $7,500 federal tax credit.

do you really want to trust vw/audi/porsche that deliberately falsified emissions testing?

  10. jednoucelovy - 8 years ago

Hybrid? Seriously, delete those old design folders. Or you might accidently put a steam engine in it.

VW, DAMN! WAKE UP! Hybrid-engines was an innovative technology in the 1990’s. Diesel was innovative hundred years ago. Your cars are outdated even before they are on a blue print! You and your German friends are a big disgrace to your own countrymen as Benz and Diesel. Shame on you!

Guess it has same guts like Škoda Kodiaq SUV hybrid which was already presented coverd with very funny front and rear coat.

VW is 10 years behind Tesla with EVs and 20 years behind with SC.
Hope they not working on battery gate.
