Tesla Model S deliveries are down 54% in Norway during Q1 2016 [Chart]

Norway is a very important market for Tesla. It’s the automaker’s biggest in Europe and about 8% of its total worldwide deliveries last year. In 2015, Tesla had flat deliveries in the country after delivering the exact same number, 4,039 Model S units, two years in a row, based on registration data.

It is still impressive for a relatively small country – though with a lot of EV incentives – but Tesla is definitely not growing in Norway anymore, or at least for the time being.

Now Tesla is off to a rough start this year. The California-based automaker delivered 705 Model S units during the first quarter 2016 versus 1,532 units during the same period last year, according to registration data.

It represents a decrease of about 54%.

It’s possible that Tesla’s Model X production ramp up is affecting its deliveries in countries where the automaker is not fulfilling Model X orders just yet – namely everywhere but the US.

Here’s a chart of Tesla monthly Model S deliveries in Norway since 2014:

Model S norway q1 2016In 2015, Tesla was also off to a rough start during the first quarter versus the same period in 2014, but ended up catching up during each subsequent quarter and finishing the year flat. At first glance, it might be more difficult to achieve this year, but once Tesla starts the European Model X deliveries later in 2016, it should be easier to achieve bigger delivery numbers.

The Model 3 unveiling could also be affecting Model S sales. Tesla has now over 276,000 Model 3 reservations and even though the vehicles are in two different segments, it would be safe to assume some potential buyers are overlapping between the two segments.

Tesla is expected to remedy the situation by updating the Model S soon.

Norway is probably bumping up against the limit of four per household.

Does that have to do with the ferry coming in just at the end of march (and thus too late for delivering all the cars aboard) which also was shown around here? Maybe these numbers will then appear in Q2.

I heard that Somali pirates hijacked the ferry and hundreds of Model S are being kept hostage. Negotiations are ongoing. Apparently they want solar panels and Powerwalls for all of their fisher huts in order to watch sat TV.

The US dollar to the Norwegian Krone is very expensive these days so it is becoming a very expensive car here too. On the pluss side our 2013 model Tesla holds its value very good!

I bought my P85+ fully loaded except rear facing seats in 2013 for 715.000 NOK. These days a P90DL fully loaded without rear facing is 1.219.000 NOK. Yes it is a better/faster car with larger battery, but I guess it is not a 70% increase in the US?

The NOK value is currently very low, and EV incentives are now being rolled back.

It really does need to be mentioned – the population of Norway is about 5 Million. In comparison, they have a smaller population than Minnesota, Wisconsin, or Colorado. That Tesla has already sold nearly 10,000 $100,000 cars there is notable, especially given the relative declining value of the Euro. One really must suspect that this market will get saturated at some point. How far can it go?

I’m sure Model 3 will sell well here, a lot of Model S owners have already ordered 2x (max limit) of Model 3’s. Personally I ordered one Model 3, being replaced with Nissan Leaf. A lot of Nissan Leafs on the roads here, I’m sure a lot of those will be replaced with Model 3 in a couple of years.
