Tesla introduces new Model X-like center console in the Model S by default [Gallery]

When Tesla launched the Model S in 2012, the automaker used the lack of console between the two front seats to highlight the car’s flat floor, something you can only build with an electric vehicle. Then Tesla launched the Model X last year and surprisingly the center console was now a default option in Tesla’s SUV, but it remained an option on the Model S until now.

Tesla appeared to have updated its Model S online design studio over the weekend and now the center console is showed on the pictures featuring the car’s interior as a standard, and apparently irremovable option, like in the Model X.

The lack of console between the two front seat was really appreciated by women with purses and men carrying briefcases since they could easily place them on the floor without having to access the second row or clutter the passenger seat.

The early lack of console also spur a third-party aftermarket for retrofits, but Tesla also introduced its own aftermarket console for $600.

It’s not clear how easily removable the feature will be for those who prefer a flat surface between the front seats, but the fact that it is now included in the cost of the vehicle will certainly be appreciated by many Tesla customers.

Tesla rarely update its design studio, but this is the second change in just a few weeks. Earlier this month, Tesla introduced new stock wheels for the Model S: Slipstream wheels.

The update also comes amid rumors that Tesla will soon give the Model S a “facelift”.

Looks like I just missed this consol upgrade.

I’m glad it’s standard, it’s very useful. Never liked the console-less version.

I certainly hope it’ll be removable. The console is seriously objectionable and most certainly a downgrade. I’ve gotten quite attached to my center “purse/briefcase” tray, and I’m never buying a car with a console again.

I really hope the fad for consoles goes away. They were invented to cover the transmission tunnel in FWD cars, and to locate the stick shift, both of which are archaic irrelevances. Center consoles are like buggy whip holders.

only the first pic shows the new center console of the design studio, the others are all old images of the well known center console insert from the Tesla Motors shop.
