Insane versus Ludicrous – drag race with the Tesla Model S P90D and P85D [video]

Yesterday DragTimes published an interesting short video of a Tesla Model S P90D on ‘Ludicrous mode’ drag racing a P85D on ‘insane mode’.

The P90D has an advertised 0 to 60 mph acceleration  in 2.8 seconds, while the P85D can get to 60 in 3.1 seconds.

As you can see, the Ludicrous equipped P90D crushed the P85D, but it doesn’t look completely right. The acceleration should be the same on both cars up to 30 mph. It looks like the P90D had a slight jump-start or something else is giving the P90D an edge, unless it’s just the angle making it look like such a head start.

If you want to know more about the hardware of the Ludicrous mode, I suggest reading this article: Elon Musk’s recent “Ludicrous” announcement hints at more synergy between Tesla and SpaceX

P85D driver seems to be asleep at the switch, so to speak. Should have rerun the race, switching drivers, to eliminate that as a variable. In either case, on-ramp anxiety is just not a problem for either car.
