The BMW i3 had a stellar month in Denmark thanks to Copenhagen’s new ride-sharing program

bmw-i3August was a great month for electric vehicles in Denmark. The European country added 549 EVs to bring the total electric vehicle registrations to 1,994 year-to-date. Only 828 electric vehicles had been registered during the same period last year- making it a 140% increase. The BMW i3 made the difference in August thanks to Copenhagen’s new BMW-backed car sharing program: DriveNow. The program took delivery of 400 new BMW i3 during the period.

If we don”t take into account the ride-sharing program, the Tesla Model S is dominating the EV market in Denmark with 725 vehicles registered or almost 50% market share. At the same period last year, Tesla sold 276 Model S’s in the country, which makes for a ~160% increase over last year.

The BMW i3 and the Tesla Model S are compensating for the sales of the Nissan LEAF which have been dropping in Denmark, as well as in most markets, ahead of the 2016 version which will arrive by the end of the year.
