Tesla’s Sleek New Home Battery, the “Tesla Powerwall” Announced. Prices Start at $3000.

Tesla unveiled its new home battery system, the Tesla Powerwall, at a Thursday night event in Hawthorne, CA. Coming in two versions, 7kWh for $3000 and 10kWh for $3500 not including an inverter or installation, the internet-connected Powerwall will be priced considerably lower than options available to the market today.

The beautifully designed home battery comes in at six inches thick, four feet high and three feet wide. It can be installed on the wall of a garage or basement by two people in less than 90 minutes. Each Tesla Powerwall will come with a 10 year guarantee.

The two variations of the Powerwall will actually serve different purposes. Tesla says the 10kWh battery will be optimized for backup applications, while the 7kWh system will be optimized for daily use applications. For households who want to live completely off the grid, 10kWh might not be enough. Fortunately Tesla has thought of this and up to nine power walls can be stacked, offering 90kWh of storage in a single unit.

The Powerwall can be ordered online from Tesla’s website, starting today. Deliveries will begin in the summer.

Tesla also announced a 100kWh system, the Powerpack, targeting commercial users.

Powerwall specs:

  • Mounting: Wall Mounted Indoor/Outdoor
  • Inverter: Pairs with growing list of inverters
  • Energy: 7kWh or 10kWh
  • Continuous Power: 2kW
  • Peak Power: 3kW
  • Round Trip Efficiency: >92%
  • Operating Temperature Range: -20C (-4F) to 43C (110F)
  • Warranty: 10 years
  • Dimensions: H: 1300mm W: 860mm D:180mm
