EGEB: Florida utilities using lying robocalls, Phoenix too hot for flying, Qinghai 100% renewable, more

Electrek Green Energy Brief: A daily technical, financial and political review/analysis of important green energy news.

South Miami Mayor Blames FPL for Robocalls Against New Solar Panel Plan – South Miami: population 12,000 — wants to become the first in Florida with an ordinance requiring every new residential home, building, or apartment complex to install solar panels. – What happens when a city says they want solar power? The utilities get back to their lying and manipulation of the people. This is a county that will be underwater – they want to do something real – and now they’re getting phone calls that are illegal during political elections. And when you hear the BS denial from the utilities – remember How the electricity utilities “use a little bit of political jiu-jitsu” to steal the sun.

Phoenix flights cancelled because it’s too hot for planes – Definition of an externality is a cost that isn’t paid for at the time of purchase. We human have warmed the world so much, that our atmosphere is fundamentally changing.

Chinese province to provide all electricity from renewable sources for a week – An estimated 1,225 gigawatt hours (GWh) of electricity will be consumed during the week-long period. 78.3 percent of it will be generated by water power and the rest will come from other renewable sources, including solar power and wind power – Plus another interesting datapoint – By 2025, Qinghai Province will be able to transmit 110,000 gigawatt hour of electricity generated by clean energy per year to other parts of China, replacing nearly 50 million tonnes of coal every year. – There will soon be an Asian HVDC clean energy electricity network that will connect Mongolia to Japan, and Russia to Thailand.

Speaking of HVDC – Construction of the HVDC France-Spain Interconnection – Check out the pictures, not a lot to read. I’m very surprised at how small the wires are moving such large volumes of electricity through the mountains.

Finding Better Places to Buy Wind and Solar Power – The BRC’s Market Analysis Platform is designed to help our members identify regions where wind or solar projects are more likely to be economically attractive. By comparing recent market prices with the estimated cost of wind or solar plants, this platform provides insight into wind and solar economics. – I’m not an RMI member, so I cannot access it directly. However, as a commercial/industrial salesperson these third party tools are appreciated to balance out my biased perspective.

Exxon, BP and Shell back carbon tax proposal to curb emissions – I’ll let Greenpeace speak for me today – “ExxonMobil will try to dress this up as climate activism, but its key agenda is protecting executives from legal accountability for climate pollution and fraud,” said Naomi Ages, senior climate campaigner at Greenpeace USA. “A nicely worded public relations exercise is no cure for decades of deception.” #exxonknew

From NASA and SpaceXTraditional solar panels used to power satellites can be bulky with heavy panels folded together using mechanical hinges. This new solar array’s design rolls up to form a compact cylinder for launch with significantly less mass and volume, potentially offering substantial cost savings as well as an increase in power for satellites – Cool

Sterling and Wilson bags EPC contract for world’s largest solar PV plant – What must it feel like to land the largest contract in the world for solar power construction? Pretty cool. They’re also the largest EPC in India. Makes sense that an Indian company would manage as much of the work wil be performed by Indians. Plus – India is the closest, largest solar power installer to Abu Dhabi (China is a bit further, US very far).

An incredible drone video of Tesla’s solar + Powerpacks project powering Kauai – Get some details at the link, check out the video below.
