Tesla to offer free charging at home and power its Supercharger network with 100% renewable energy in Sweden

Building on the momentum Tesla is currently experiencing in Sweden with 271% growth in sales in 2015 based on registration data, the automaker is announcing an interesting partnership with Swedish electric utility Skellefteå Kraft to supply the Supercharger network in Sweden with 100% renewable energy and offer Tesla owners completely free charging at home.

Under the new partnership, which is the first of its kind for Tesla, Model S owners will enjoy free charging at home for up to 45,000 km (28,000 miles) over a 3 year period.

Tesla Director for Nordic countries Peter Bardenfleth-Hansen said that the partnership will serve as a model for Tesla’s future associations with electric utilities:

“Skellefteå Kraft is a highly sustainable brand that really stands out approaching the world’s contemporary challenges. It requires motivation, creativity and perseverance. We like partners with a strong maverick profile. With this agreement, our Swedish customers can enjoy even more environmentally friendly electricity free of charge, whilst we at Tesla can look forward to our first energy company partnership that can serve as a role model for how to build sustainable partnerships in the future.”

Sweden’s electricity rates are quite low due to abundant hydro-electric power, but nonetheless, the package should represent an interesting incentive for potential buyers in the country. A Tesla owner will virtually be able to drive for free by both charging at home and at the Supercharger network.

After a slow start in 2014, Tesla has been experiencing significant growth in Sweden over the last year:Model s Sweden reg 2015

Based on registration data, the automaker delivered close to 1,000 Model S’s in the country in 2015 with an important increase in December.

Although the first of its kind when it comes to the free charging at home, it’s not Tesla’s first partnership with Skellefteå Kraft. Last year, the company became Tesla’s exclusive supplier of electricity for the Supercharger network, which now consists of 14 stations across the country. The charging stations are powered exclusively from hydro and wind power generated by Skellefteå Kraft.

Smart move. Probably costs Tesla the equivalent of ~1k USD and it’s great marketing (“Free sustainable travel!”). Probably helps against “local supercharging” and related costs for extending superchargers, too.

If a member of the Duggar family and their mate were to move to Sweden, they could time their pregnancy cycles to allow them to be on perpetual paid parental leave.
